The Ecopista do Vouga
Converted from the tracks of the historic Linha do Vouga narrow-gauge railway, it provides a remarkably smooth, wide trail with a very gentle, flat incline. For hikers, this means you can focus entirely on the scenery—sweeping river views, deep green valleys, and old stone railway infrastructure—without having to worry about tricky footing or steep mountain scrambles.
Because the trail runs long across the region, here is the ultimate curated itinerary designed to take you from your base at Solar Alegria to the iconic Ponte Ferroviária do Poço de SantiagoClick to open side panel for more information (the famous stone arch railway bridge) and back.

The Hiking Itinerary: Solar Alegria to Ponte do Poço de Santiago
To maximize your time on the most scenic parts of the ecopista and avoid walking on busy main roads, you will start with a very short 5-minute drive from the hotel to access the trail, followed by a beautiful riverside hike.
- Total Walking Distance: ~9.5 km total (round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (mostly flat, paved/packed surface)
- Time: Approx. 2 to 2.5 hours of walking time (plus time for photos).
Step 1: The Starting Point (Cedrim Station) | Logistics: Walk 5 minutes to the old Cedrim Railway Station.
The Trailhead: Step right onto the Ecopista do Vouga, heading West (downriver/toward Sever do Vouga).
Step 2: Highlights on the Way to the Bridge
As you hike west from Cedrim, the trail hugs the slopes above the Vouga River. Keep an eye out for these signature highlights:
- The Old Cedrim Station: Before you even leave, admire the beautifully restored traditional building, often decorated with classic Portuguese blue and white tiles (azulejos) that depict old regional life.
- The Paradela Tunnel: Roughly 2.5 km into your walk, you will encounter one of the coolest features of the old railway line—a historic stone-lined tunnel cutting straight through the mountain ridge. It is fully lit for pedestrians, creating a dramatic, echoing crossing.
- Paradela Station & Resting Area: Just past the tunnel, you’ll pass the old Paradela station area. It is a perfect spot to take a quick sip of water under the shade.
- The Pine and Eucalyptus Forests: The entire stretch is flanked by dense, aromatic green forests, with frequent clearings that open up to dramatic views of the wide Vouga River snaking through the canyon below.
Step 3: Arriving at the Famous Bridge
At the ~4.7 km mark, you will arrive at the crown jewel of the entire ecopista network: the Ponte do Poço de Santiago. Built between 1911 and 1913, this architectural masterpiece is the tallest stone-arch bridge in Portugal.
- Walking across it feels like stepping through time, suspended high above the mouth of the Mau River where it spills into the Vouga.
- Take your time to look down at the rocky river pools below and snap photos of the massive masonry arches curving out into the forest.
Step 4: The Return Journey
After enjoying the views at the bridge, simply turn around and follow the Ecopista do VougaClick to open side panel for more information back east. Because it’s an old railway line, the return journey has a practically unnoticeable, very gentle incline back to your car at Cedrim Station.
Rota dos Baloiços de Ribeiradio

MAP
1. Baloiço do Rio (Vouga River)
- The Vibe: Sitting right at water level by the Ribeiradio Dam reservoir.
- Access: Drive along the EN16 to the village of Paço. Park by the roadside.
- The Walk: A very short, flat walk to the riverbank.
2. Baloiço do Parque Ambiental de Pedra
- The Vibe: Tucked into a beautifully restored, green environmental park. This swing offers a more intimate, shaded nature experience compared to the open mountain vistas.
- Access: From the river, drive a few minutes inland toward the designated Parque Ambiental de Pedra area. There is a clear parking zone at the park entrance.
- The Walk: A pleasant 5 to 10-minute walk along the park’s designated walking footpaths. It’s an easy, family-friendly stroll through local flora.
3. Baloiço do Miradouro de Ribeiradio
- The Vibe: This is your transition swing. Located at a established stone viewpoint (miradouro), it sits halfway up the valley, offering a classic postcard view looking down over the village of Ribeiradio and the winding river below.
- Access: Drive uphill from the center of Ribeiradio following signs for the viewpoint. You can park directly at or very close to the viewpoint itself.
- The Walk: Virtually no hiking required. You step out of the car almost directly onto the viewpoint platform.
4. Baloiço da Serra (Serra do Ladário)
- The Vibe: High-altitude, rugged mountain territory. The views open up to a massive 360-degree panorama of the entire Lafões region.
- Access: Drive up the winding mountain roads past Belmonte. The paved road eventually transitions to dirt forestry tracks. Park your car where the road becomes too rough or steep.
- The Walk: A moderate 15 to 20-minute uphill hike along the dirt track to reach the mountain crest.
5. Baloiço Terra e Mar
- The Vibe: The grand finale. The highest peak on the route where, on clear days, the mountains part to show the Atlantic ocean line in the far distance.
- Access: Continue driving along the ridge track from the previous swing. Park at the final flat clearing before the summit.
- The Walk: A short but steep 10-minute trek over loose rocks and mountain terrain.
Logistics & Navigation Tips
- Recommended Route Order: Follow the order above (1 to 5). It saves your car from brutal, repetitive uphill climbs and builds up the views from the valley floor to the highest peaks.
- Footwear: While Swings 1, 2, and 3 are easy to walk to in casual shoes, Swings 4 and 5 absolutely require shoes with good grip due to loose gravel and rocks on the mountain trails.
- Driving: A standard car can do this entire route if you drive slowly on the upper dirt tracks, but park early if you feel the terrain getting too rough—walking the extra 5 minutes is always safer than risking a low-clearance oil pan!
CURATED SELECTION OF WATERFALLS ACCESSIBLE BY CAR NEARBY SOLAR ALEGRIA
Cascata da Cabreia

Located in Silva Escura (Sever do Vouga), Cascata da CabreiaClick to open side panel for more information is roughly a 20- to 25-minute drive from your location and is arguably the most impressive waterfall in the immediate region. The Mau River crashes down a beautiful 25-meter drop into a large, natural swimming pool.
Car Accessibility: Excellent. You can drive right down to the designated parking lot of the surrounding leisure park.
The Walk: Only a short, flat stroll of a few hundred meters from the parking area along established paths to the foot of the waterfall.
Amenities: It features a fully equipped park with picnic tables, restrooms, and plenty of shaded green lawns.
Cascata Água d’Alte

Tucked away near the village of Vilarinho in the Talhadas parish, Cascata Água d’AlteClick to open side panel for more information is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away by car, right near the edges of the local reservoir. It features an incredibly picturesque mountain cascade cutting through lush, dense vegetation.
Amenities: While it lacks a full picnic park like Cabreia, it features two purpose-built wooden viewing platforms that offer excellent viewpoints of the falls..
Car Accessibility: Very good. You can navigate paved roads to a nearby main access road where a small parking clearance is available.
The Walk: From where you leave the car, it is a quick 5-minute walk (about 500 meters) on a flat track to reach the designated viewing platforms.
The top river beaches (praias fluviais) nearby
When staying at Solar Alegria in Ribeiradio, you are exceptionally close to the Vouga River basin and its surrounding mountain tributaries. This area features excellent options for both highly monitored, family-friendly swimming and quiet, raw riverside spots where entering the water is not officially supported or advisable.
Excellent for Swimming & Fully Equipped
These spots are designed specifically for bathing, featuring controlled waters, solid infrastructure, and official seasonal safety measures.
Zona de Fruição Ribeirinha de Sejães (Oliveira de Frades)
Distance: ~10-12 minutes east.
The Setup: Located on the margins of the same Ribeiradio Dam reservoir you see from the local swings. It is a premium riverfront leisure complex. Rather than just raw river water, it features purpose-built swimming pools right next to the river, green lawns for sunbathing, a sports court, a picnic area, and the AquaVouga bar/café.
Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco (Sever do Vouga)
Distance: ~20 minutes west.
The Setup: A highly popular, officially certified Blue Flag river beach on the Vouga River. It features a manicured sandy beach area, a seasonal floating swimming pool anchored directly in the calm river water, a children’s playground, and public restrooms/showers.
Praia Fluvial de Destriz (Oliveira de Frades)
Distance: ~20-25 minutes north.
The Setup: Tucked along the clean, cooler waters of the Vouga’s tributary, the Alfusqueiro River. It features beautiful natural shade trees, crystal-clear water, a grass lawn, and support facilities (like a bar and bathrooms). It is highly beloved by locals for a traditional mountain-river swim.
Swimming Not Allowed / Not Recommended
These riverside areas are wonderful for scenery, walks, or a picnic, but entering the water is either legally prohibited, unmonitored, or naturally risky due to deep dam currents or a lack of safety infrastructure.
Praia Fluvial / Zona de Lazer do Rio (Ribeiradio – Near Baloiço do Rio)
Distance: ~5 minutes down the hill.
Why it’s not recommended for swimming: While there is a beautiful wooden platform and a scenic swing right at the river’s edge, this section is directly impacted by the immediate proximity to the Ribeiradio Dam. Because it is a working hydro-reservoir, the water depth changes suddenly, currents can alter without warning, and the bottom can be muddy and hazardous. Enjoy the picnic tables and the view, but avoid diving in.
Praia Fluvial de Porto Várzea (Campia / Vouzela)
Distance: ~20-25 minutes east.
Why it’s not recommended for swimming: This is a beautiful green park area along the Alfusqueiro River featuring a great local restaurant/bar and picnic benches. However, the municipality officially lists it as a non-monitored zone where swimming is discouraged (desaconselhada). The water is tranquil and beautiful to look at, but there are no lifeguards, and the riverbed is left completely wild.
Praia Fluvial do Parque Ambiental de Pedre-Ribeiradio
A great local addition right down the hill from you. Parque Ambiental de Pedre-RibeiradioClick to open side panel for more information provides a highly accessible, green riverbank area setup for the community. Visitors enjoy its manicured layout, refreshing water entry points, and shaded spots, making it one of the most practical and immediate swimming areas from your starting point.
